His father was a policeman. Both Vantha and Ravuth, his big brother, were left to their uncle who also has a family of his own. While in Phnom Penh, they were helped by an organization to go to school. Their relatives were also poor so they decided to free themselves from the responsibility so they were sent to their grandmother in Siem Reap. But the grandmother was very sickly and could not care for them. She felt bad to see her grandchildren suffering living with her.
